Halloween - Make A Witch's Hat From Styrofoam Cup
Witch's Hat
Made From a Styrofoam Cup
One large Styrofoam cup
Old black pantyhose or other black fabric
Scissors
Glue
Clip
Regular or craft store paint - taupe
Dollar store poster paints - black and blue
Paint brushes or dollar store cotton swabs
These are large Styrofoam coffee cups.
Cut out the bottom as pictured above.
Gently gather the bottom of the cup together and fold over the gathered styrofoam, glue it and then clip it while the glue dries. It's not that easy to gather the styrofoam so work it gently because you don't want to rip the cup.
Snip the lip of the cup many times. Larger spacing between the snips makes it more likely that the some of the cut cup edges will fall off while you are working on them. Spread them out gently. They are the brim of the witch's hat.
Paint the cup with regular paint store paint. You need a real paint as opposed to poster paints or watercolors because you need the paint to adhere to the styrofoam and the thinner, watery paints won't do that. I chose the color taupe as my base color.
I mixed blue poster paint with a bit of black poster paint to give me a nice, spooky Midnight Blue color. I also added extra water to the container because a solid color over a solid color will not work very well. The watered down Midnight Blue lets the taupe color show through and drips also look neat on the hat. Also, you can purposely let more area of the taupe show through by not painting randomly not painting small areas. This gives a nice contrast between the colors and is eye-catching.
I cut off the leg of an old pair of black pantyhose and cut a small strip for the band of my hat. I just tied it on with the ends hanging out.
And that's it! You've now got a witch's hat made from a Styrofoam coffee cup.
To make the witch's broom in my top picture I collected fall/winter twigs. I made several small brooms for another Halloween project. How many twigs you need depends on how many brooms you are going to make. Cut them into similar sizes with some shears and then spray painted them with metallic gold spray paint. Let dry.
Then I tied the twigs in bunches with string.
I kept thicker and longer branches for the broom handle. Then I used more of my old pantyhose to tie the broom together.
Pretty cool broom! And very easy to make.
Then I just added some unraveled cotton balls and some cardboard black bats for the rest of my Halloween decoration.
