How to Make A Halloween Snake

Halloween Snake

A really fun, easy Halloween craft.

Snake Coming Out of a Rusted Tin Can

What you will need for this project:

A paper grocery bag or roll of shipping paper
A tin can
A cotton ball
Dollar store poster paints
Brown paint
Black magic marker
Metallic gold spray paint
Black spray paint
Paint brushes or dollar store cotton swabs to paint with
Glue
Clips
Scissors
Scrap paper

I used a the shipping paper I had on hand. The dollar store sells this paper. A roll for a dollar. You can also use a paper grocery bag instead. Just cut the bag open and take off the handles.

I drew random black streaks with my black magic marker on the paper. Since the paper came off the roll the paper went back to its rolled up shape.

I put the rolled up sheet under the kitchen faucet and got it wet and then crumbled it up.  I crumble it because the crumbling leaves texture marks after it is dry.

While it is still damp I glued one end about an inch in and clipped it.

Then I twisted the paper roll, and at the same time shaped it into an S shape, glued the other end and clipped that one too.

Let dry.

Once it was dry I randomly painted it with brown paint, here and there. You won't be able to paint all areas because of the twisting so just paint as much as looks good. When the brown paint was dry I used the black magic marker again to color areas, here and there. With the light brown paper, the brown paint and the black marker you will have a lot of color contrast showing through.

To make the snake's head, I shaped the cotton ball into an oval shape. Then I added some water to my black poster paint and dabbed the cotton ball until it was painted black. I used a cotton swab to paint (more like dab) the cotton ball.

Let it dry.

I cut out a pronged tongue from a sheet of white typing paper. I painted it red and let it dry.

I used white poster paint to make the snakes eyeballs and then I dabbed the pupils in with my black poster paint.

I glued the tongue to the underside of the black cotton ball snake head.

Then I glued the snake's head to the paper snake body.

To make rusty tin cans I washed out some food cans and took the labels off. Let dry.

Then I spray painted them black with .99 cent Walmart black spray paint.

Then I sprayed them with metallic gold spray paint. Randomly spray the gold spray paint but don't cover all areas. Let some black show through.

And that's how to get some cool rusted out looking tin cans.

Then I just put part of my snake coming out of a tin can to complete my Spooky Halloween Snake decoration.
