Make A Halloween Witch's Hat From Paper Bag

Halloween Witch's Hat

Made from a paper grocery bag

What you will need for this project:

A large paper grocery bag
Scissors
Brown paint
Black magic marker or black paint
Glue
Old black pantyhose or other black fabric
Small piece of cardboard
Gold or silver glitter
Exacto knife
Pencil
Ruler

Pull off the paper handles of your paper grocery bag. Cut the bag open along one of the seams. Cut out the bottom. Shape the paper into a cone temporarily to decide how large or small you want your witch's hat to be. Cut to size without changing the square/rectangular shape. You just want to get rid of excess paper at this point.

Crumble up the bag. Put the crumpled paper under a faucet and completely soak it in water. Squeeze out excess water.

Open up the wet paper.

Shape into a cone, scrunch the top together and glue the seam. When the glue is dry, snip upward (about an 1 1/2 inches) all around the bottom at one to two inch intervals. This is going to be the brim of the hat and the snips allow you to fold the brim up otherwise there isn't enough give in the paper and your brim will tear.

Fold the scrunched top over, glue it and put a clip on it until it dries.

Paint the hat with brown paint.

Take a large black marker and make random streaks over the brown paint. Fill in areas. Just keep layering in the brown paint and then add the black streaks. You are trying to get some contrast and aging effect. Black paint will also work.

To make your hat buckle, measure out a square cardboard piece.

Cut out the center with an Exacto knife.

Color your cardboard buckle with the black magic marker.

Put glue on the cardboard and then sprinkle the glitter over it. Dust it off and repeat until it is covered in glitter. Let dry.

Cut the leg off of some old black pantyhose. Tie the pantyhose leg around the base of the hat. This is the band. Glue your glittering buckle to the panty hose band. Let dry.

And that's how you turn a paper grocery bag into a scary witch's hat!
